Concerns have been raised over the visual impact of such a power plant and the requisite power lines entailed. Many think the area around Lake Mývatn already suffers from too much construction. There are also concerns about possible impact from the disposal of outlet water.

Námafjall Area
Bjarnarflag is west of Námafjall mountain and south of Námaskarð valley. The geothermal area reaches much further west of Námafjall. This is where the first large geothermal power project was realized in Iceland (in 1969, 3 MW).
Concerns have been raised over the visual impact of such a power plant and the requisite power lines entailed. Many think the area around Lake Mývatn already suffers from too much construction. There are also concerns about possible impact from the disposal of outlet water.
Landvernd, Icelandic Environment Association, and other Icelandic nature conservation associations have requested a new evaluation of the environmental effects be carried out for the proposed Bjarnarflag power project. Additionally, both Lake Mývatn and the river Laxá have been in the Ramsar agreement since 1977.
